Project 2 Everyday People

For this project, I chose to observe the people who take the subway every day in my city Chengdu. The context of this project comes from some phenomena I observe and experience when I take the subway every day——some poor signals and order problems affect the compartment space of the subway, which leads to some accidents and makes the commuting time of the users longer. These observations and experience have become the source of inspiration for my project.

Background&Research

Firstly, I investigated the progress of the Chengdu Metro. The first line of Chengdu Metro was opened in 2010, and it has expanded to the 12 subway lines by 2021. The comparison could clearly illustrate the rapid development of the Chengdu subway in the past eleven years. Meanwhile, I also collected population growth data of Chengdu in the past ten years and the number of people who take the subway every weekday continues to grow, nearly ten times as compared with that in 2010. It can be observed that Chengdu’s population is in a period of rapid growth, and the transportation system is also multiplying, so it will face more significant pressure in the future.
Given the observed phenomenon, I began to conduct a survey questionnaire to confirm the existence of this phenomenon. Depending on data analysis, this phenomenon is mainly used caused by the fact that passengers are being sometimes in a hurry and have inadequate habits and consciousness. Meanwhile, it is also because the current Chengdu Metro does not provide any passengers with a more straightforward service system.
I began to interview target groups to understand their pain points and problems they wanted to solve when taking the subway.

The next step is to analyze the results and create fictional characters based on real users.

I created two personas as reference models for the users, hoping to capture the different needs of the crowd from their different identities.

Meanwhile,I also created the Journey Map to understand users’ thoughts, feelings, pain points and needs at different stages of the subway ride.

In the early stage of the project, it is very important to use 5C model technology to observe target users and create virtual personas and user maps, which can analyze the pain points of target users and find the design points for the smooth progress of the project.
